As one of Southern California's inland counties, Riverside is mostly made up of desert. But don't let this fool you - this area has a lot to offer both residents and visitors. One of the best known features of the county is the Joshua Tree National Park, which is home to the famed Joshua tree and is visited by millions of campers, hikers, and other visitors each year. The serene beauty of the Mojave Desert is another of the County's hot spots (no pun intended) that attracts many people. Apart from the natural landscape, Riverside County is also known for its Coachella Valley. Coachella is synonymous with leisure activities - golf being one of the biggest. There are over 200 golf courses in this area that enthusiasts flock to each year. However, golf isn't the only offering. Casinos, resort hotels, and spas dot the area, attracting those looking to relax and unwind. Coachella is also home to several big festivals. The Palm Springs International Film Festival takes place each January, rivaling Sundance, and the Coachella Music Festival in April is a three-day event attracting tens of thousands of revelers, including many celebrities.
Riverside County extends east to the Colorado River, which is a popular destination for camping, fishing, boating, and swimming. Other places of interest include the Church of Scientology's international headquarters, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, the Palm Springs Desert Museum, and the Lake Perris State Recreation Area. While many people automatically think of LA or San Diego when they envision Southern California, there is truly so much beyond those metropolises, and Riverside County is a perfect example.
