Essex County, New Jersey is home to four of the 100 wealthiest cities in the United States. Newark is the largest city in New Jersey, and it is also the county seat of Essex County. Interestingly enough, all of the counties in New Jersey, including Essex, are considered metropolitan areas—not many places can make that same claim to fame—but while that might make it sound as if you just can't get away from the turmoil of the city, that certainly isn't the case.
The county is actually home to a number of wildlife reserves and bird sanctuaries. The local Audubon Society can provide you with a list of birds and the best places to spot them. Children will enjoy a day at the Turtleback Zoo or, for older kids, take them to one of the many skate parks in the county.

When it's time to eat, the county has a full range of gourmet restaurants, ethnic eateries with every imaginable type of cuisine, or, if you're looking for something simpler, head to a local diner and order up some comfort food.
