Nassau County Information

Located on Long Island in New York, Nassau County is one of rich history, natural beauty, and modern culture. With only two cities, three towns, and 64 villages, the county is relatively small, but it is considered to be one of the wealthiest. In fact, in 2008 Forbes magazine placed it at number 10 in the list of the 25 richest counties in the United States. The County was also home to President Theodore Roosevelt, who lived at his home called Sagamore Hill from 1885 until his death in 1919. The area is now a National Historic Site featuring the Theodore Roosevelt Museum and is one of the county's most visited locations.

Nassau County is also known for sports, namely in the form of horse racing. Belmont Park, located in Elmont, is one of the nation's most famous thoroughbred racing tracks. It opened here in 1905 and is home to the Belmont Stakes, which is the final leg of the world-famous Triple Crown. Thousands of people attend this exciting race each year, betting on and cheering for their favorite horse. However, horse racing isn't the only sport the county is known for. It is also where the New York Islanders NHL team plays, which is another popular attraction for Nassau. Finally, the county's natural beauty is also worth mentioning. Miles of seashore, several parks, and even a wildlife sanctuary (Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge) make up the area, providing residents and visitors with beautiful scenery.
