El Paso County Information

El Paso County is situated on the far west side of the State of Texas. Due to its strong heritage, many of the names in the state are Spanish—El Paso, meaning "the Pass" is no exception. Much of the flavor of the area is influenced by the county's strong ties with its sister city, Juarez, across the border in Old Mexico.

If you're visiting El Paso County for the first time, be sure to check your watch. The county is one of the few in the state that is on Mountain Time rather than Central Time. Because of its position on the far edge of the state, and the overall enormous size of Texas, someone leaving El Paso can reach Los Angeles almost as quickly as he can reach Houston.

El Paso is the county seat, and the largest city in the county. It sits on the banks of the Rio Grande with the Juarez Mountains behind it creating a gorgeous symphony of colors, textures, blazing sun, and nights filled with stars that go on forever. You'll find your choice of accommodations while you're there—from fabulous four-star hotels, to homey bed and breakfasts, to rustic campgrounds—El Paso has it all.

There is no lack of entertainment in this county, and while there are plenty of tried and true activities like hiking, cycling and running, why settle for that when you can experience a little of the Old West on the back of a horse. Nothing beats a trail ride through the desert, especially if the cactus is in bloom. End the day with a picnic on the banks of the Rio Grande while you watch the sun set and create a perfect ending to your time in El Paso County.
