Hidalgo County, Texas was founded in 1852, with Edinburg as its county seat. As one of the fastest growing counties in the United States, Hidalgo is becoming attractive to businesses and industries looking to expand. Situated along the banks of the Rio Grande River and part of the Rio Grande Valley, Hidalgo enjoys warm temperatures almost year-round.
Much of Hidalgo's history is linked to the state's fight for independence from Mexico. There are several museums in the county, like the Museum of South Texas, that guide visitors through the history of the state. If you travel to McAllen, the Botanical Gardens there offer an amazing nature preserve for the public to view without charge. There are places in the garden to spread a picnic lunch, and after you eat, you can walk off your lunch on one of the many trails they offer. The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, near the Alamo, is another outdoor retreat. This is a great place for kids to see unusual birds, butterflies, and plants; and for adults to snap some amazing photos.
The area has many campgrounds open year-round for visitors who want to "rough it," but it also has its fair share of four-star hotels and unique bed and breakfasts as well. There are several lakes in the area that offer water sports of all kinds—boating, fishing, and swimming will keep you cool when summer temperatures are on the rise.
You can head to Weslaco for a day of shopping on an historic Texas Main Street. One-of-a-kind stores offer shoppers a special experience that is very different from a trip to the mall—and you'll certainly find more than one exciting restaurant to tempt your taste buds.
