Pierce County Information
Located in the west-central region—just south of Seattle—Pierce County, Washington is an area of moderate temperatures, craggy mountains covered with timber, and more than a hundred miles of saltwater coastline. Tacoma is the current county seat, but the original was Steilacoom—chosen because it was the only town in Washington that had its own jail.
Mount Rainier National Park is in Pierce County, bringing with it all the spectacle and majesty of the Cascade Mountain Range. Mount Rainier is one of the most prestigious challenges for climbers. The year-round glaciers and sheer cliffs make the climb one of the most difficult in the United States. For those less adventurous, the lower part of the mountain is excellent for hiking, camping, skiing, and snowshoeing, and it is a destination of choice for amateur and professional photographers alike.
If you're an art lover, be sure to take time for a trip to the Dale Chihuly Glass Exposition in Tacoma. Here you'll find some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring glass designs in the world. Chihuly is the artist responsible for the 500-foot long colorful, all glass bridge that was opened in 2002 to link downtown Tacoma to the waterfront.
This city is a great place to take in some museums, visit the theater, or tour a picturesque lighthouse. Shopping in the city is also a great way to spend an idle day. The shops and small boutiques along the Puget Sound shoreline are full of unique pieces made by local artists and craftsmen.
