Alameda County Information

Alameda County is situated on the eastern portion of the San Francisco Bay and is generally considered a "working class" area, particularly in relation to its ritzy neighbors. Indeed, the city of Oakland, which is also the county seat, is a major port where thousands of blue-collar laborers report to work each day. However, don't let this fool you into thinking the area won't have a lot to offer in the way of trendy restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. The area actually has plenty of these, especially in the Grand-Lakeshore district in Oakland. This area is one of the city's highlights and features shops, restaurants, theaters, a farmers' market, nightclubs, and more. There is even a symphony and a ballet in Oakland, as well as the Oakland Zoo and Chinatown. The city is also known for its professional sports teams, including the Raiders (NFL), Athletics (MLB), and the Golden State Warriors (NBA).

Another popular feature of Alameda County is its natural beauty. With the bay to the west and redwoods to the east, the county is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking and jogging are popular activities in these scenic wooded areas and along the San Francisco Bay Trail. The County also has more than 350 parks for residents and visitors to enjoy, and eight National Historic Landmarks, including the Joaquin Miller House and the USS Hornet (aircraft carrier). Though it may not have the glitz and glam of a couple of its neighboring counties, Alameda offers its own brand of culture and appeal that should not be underestimated.
