Suffolk County Information

According to Forbes Magazine in 2008, Suffolk County on Long Island is the 24th richest county in the United States. Indeed, the County is known for its affluence and upscale communities, where two of those communities have median home prices of over $2 million. The area also boasts numerous art galleries, museums, performing arts centers, wineries, and more. A popular destination is the American Airpower Museum located at the Republic Airport. For families, the Children's Maritime Museum, featuring a navigation station and a virtual submarine, is a fun place to visit.

Another notable feature of the County is its natural beauty. Because of its location on Long Island, the County is surrounded by water on three sides, which means abundant beaches and oceanfront areas. There are over 100 public beaches for residents and visitors to enjoy and over 1,000 miles of scenic coastline. With this location in mind, you would also expect to find lighthouses in the county, and you won't be disappointed. In fact, Suffolk County has 15 lighthouses - more than any other county in America! Probably the best known is the Fire Island Lighthouse, which was constructed in 1857 and is open for visitors. The county is also home to numerous parks which are perfect for walking, jogging, biking, or just relaxing. There are also several wildlife preserves and even a zoo. Within its borders, Suffolk County also has two Indian reservations, the Shinnecock Reservation and the Poospatuck Reservation. Each of these reservations has a population of less than 1,000.
