Kern County Information

Anchored by Bakersfield, Kern County, California is the third largest county in the 48 (contiguous) United States. Once a sleepy area settled by migrant workers during the Dust Bowl, the county is located less than 100 miles south of Los Angeles. Primarily an agricultural area, Kern County is a peaceful respite from the L.A. insanity. Local wineries produce almost 25 percent of the wine in California.

Bakersfield, the largest city in the county, is centrally located mid-way between two major national forests—Sequoia and Los Padres. In the spring, both forests draw tourists hoping to see the vibrant color displays produced by the many varieties of wild flowers. The parks also offer camping, hiking, and biking trails, and if that's just a little too close to nature for your tastes, there are also many picturesque lodges and hotels in and near the parks. If you're more into water sports, check out the opportunities on the Kern River or one of the five lakes in the area. Here you'll find boating, fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting, and the camping spots will take your breath away.

While you're here, don't miss a chance to visit one of our fine wineries. Stop in for a wine tasting and take a tour of the facility. If wine isn't your thing, Bakersfield has an outstanding symphony orchestra, and the Civic Center holds regular concerts in a variety of venues.

Of course, the big draw for California in general and Kern County in particular is the fabulous weather. Balmy days with moderate temperatures are with you all year-round. Snowbirds or anyone else looking for respite from frigid winters in the north are invited to come visit the best of the best in Kern County.
