Hillsborough County Information

Hillsborough County is located in west central Florida. The County is nearly landlocked, and if it weren't for a small strip of land that extends to Tampa Bay, it would be. Interestingly, much of the county is unincorporated in spite of its large population, and most communities are Census Designated Places. In fact, the entire county only has three cities: Tampa, Plant City, and Temple Terrace.

The City of Tampa is Hillsborough County's best known feature, as it is a popular place to live and visit. This city on the Gulf Coast is part of the larger Tampa Bay metropolitan area, and is notable for its tourism, theme parks, sports teams, and cultural appeal. Many people flock to Tampa to enjoy Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, the Florida Aquarium, Adventure Island, and other theme parks. With teams like the Buccaneers, the Rays, and the Lightning, sports are another huge draw for the area. Tampa is also the host of the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival, where mock pirates invade the area and a parade attracts hundred of thousands of revelers.

Outside of Tampa, there is still a lot to see and do. Two state parks in Hillsborough County are known for their varied recreational activities: Alafia River State Park and Hillsborough River State Park. Both offer hiking, biking, canoeing, bird watching, and Hillsborough River also has a swimming pool, restaurant, and a gift shop. Egmont Key State Park, located at the mouth of Tampa Bay, is another great place to take in the scenery. Though it is only accessible by boat or ferry, the island's beautiful beaches, lush vegetation, and interesting wild life attract hikers, campers, and others.
