Essex County Information

Essex County, Massachusetts was founded in 1626. Salem shares the county seat with Lawrence. Salem was once a busy, influential seaport—in fact, Congress declared it the first national historic site in the United States—but its real claim to lasting fame has been the Salem Witch Trials.

Salem has been the backdrop for things dark and frightening. Books like The Crucible exploited the cruelty and fear of the era; but the town's lighter side was seen on television's Bewitched. A comedy about a 20th Century witch, the show poked good-natured fun at Salem, and in response, the town began using the image of "Samantha" on much of their signage.

Now there are plenty of things to do in Essex County besides read about witches and cemeteries. Essex National Heritage Area is a mere 10 miles from Boston. It sits right on the coast and offers miles and miles of gorgeous beaches and craggy cliffs just perfect for climbing and picnicking. If you're a shopper, you'll be impressed with the plethora of boutiques, quaint shops, quirky art galleries, and the many restaurants that offer up yummy Yankee concoctions and fresh seafood.

The area is steeped in history—you can visit the House of Seven Gables one day and the Lawrence Hydroelectric Center the next. You won't have to worry about what to do so much as you'll have to try to figure out how much you can do. You can enjoy a hot night on the town because there are a host of clubs that offer dancing and live music; or you can take in a gourmet meal and then head to the theater. Whatever you want, the best of Essex County is within your grasp, so what are you waiting for? Come see for yourself.
